Marius Stravinsky
Already at the age of four, Marius Stravinsky began playing the violin, receiving his education at the Central Moscow Music School. At the age of ten, he continued his studies at the British Yehudi Menuhin School and eventually received a scholarship to Eton College. Another scholarship led him to the Royal Academy of Music in London. Following his graduation, he first encountered conducting in 1998 when he assisted Claudio Abbado for Don Giovanni at the Aix-en-Provence Festival.
In 2002, he took on the position of Kapellmeister at the Moscow Philharmonic and Helikon Opera, where he developed an extensive opera repertoire including works such as Lulu (Berg), Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (Shostakovich), Les Dialogues des Carmelites (Poulenc), Mavra (Stravinsky), and Carmen (Bizet), among others. In 2007, he became the Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Karelia, making him the youngest conductor in Russia to hold such a position. In 2012, he made his debut at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, receiving critical and audience acclaim for his opera conducting of Mavra and The Nightingale. From 2013 to 2015, he worked as musical assistant to Vladimir Jurowski at the London Philharmonic Orchestra, which led to a busy concert schedule collaborating with numerous orchestras including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (UK), Philharmonia Orchestra (UK), Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, St. Petersburg Chamber Orchestra, Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Thuringian Symphony Orchestra, State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Belarus, National Orchestra of Malta, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Opera Philharmonic, Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra, Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, Prague Philharmonia, Mikhailovsky Theater St. Petersburg, and several others.
He possesses a diverse repertoire, including premiere recordings of works by Ignaz Brüll, Salomon Jadassohn, and Paul Pabst (all on Cameo Classics). Marius Stravinsky resides in Berlin and has been conducting the Staatskapelle Berlin and the Orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin for performances of the Staatsballett Berlin since 2016, including most recently Giselle in 2024.
