Season 25/26

An overview of the upcoming season!

Three premieres, including two world premieres, a ballet for children and young people, an evening dedicated to emerging choreographers, and a wide-ranging programme of supporting events and educational activities — the 25/26 season programme is here!

With Wunderkammer (31 October 2025, Komische Oper Berlin @Schillertheater), artist-in-residence Marcos Morau will create his first full-length production for the company, drawing inspiration from the so-called "cabinets of curiosities," which in Renaissance and Baroque Europe brought together the strange and fascinating from science, art, and nature. Director Kirill Serebrennikov and choreographer Yuri Possokhov will collaborate on Nureyev (21 March 2026, Deutsche Oper Berlin), their first production for Staatsballett Berlin outside of Russia. The work premiered at the Bolshoi Theatre in 2017 but was removed from the repertoire in 2023 due to Russia’s ban on "non-traditional values" propaganda. This dance event combines ballet, opera, and drama to pay tribute to the life and career of Rudolf Nureyev, an icon of ballet and the arts.

As part of the two-part premiere Fearful Symmetries (30 May 2026, Staatsoper Unter den Linden), Christian Spuck will create a new work that visually interprets the rhythmic intensity and energy of John Adams' composition of the same name while exploring the ambivalence of power. The evening will also feature George Balanchine's masterwork Symphony in C, set to Georges Bizet’s symphony — a ballet that impresses with its technical precision, artistic virtuosity, and breathtaking complexity.

Two productions are planned for the Tischlerei stage at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Ensemble member Dominik White Slavkovský will create Chicxulub oder Der Floh des Teufels (20 September 2025), a ballet for children and young people that invites audiences into a world of quirky encounters with dinosaurs and eccentric superheroes. In addition, the second edition of the Next Generation format will showcase original choreographic creations by company dancers.

Repertoire titles at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden include Gods and Dogs, featuring works by Jiří Kylián and Crystal Pite; Swan Lake by Patrice Bart; and Winterreise by Christian Spuck, based on Franz Schubert's song cycle in Hans Zender's musical adaptation. At the Deutsche Oper Berlin, audiences can also enjoy Minus 16 with choreographies by Ohad Naharin and Sharon Eyal, as well as Edward Clug's A Midsummer Night's Dream with commissioned music by Milko Lazar.

Tanz ist KLASSE!, the Staatsballett’s education programme, will present TiK! On Stage, an evening on the grand stage of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Inspired by songs by David Bowie, around 100 children and young people from four Berlin schools, along with 30 amateur dancers over the age of 60, will explore the theme of identity. Alongside the established programme for children and young people, school groups, families, adults, and people with disabilities, the upcoming season will also feature two new initiatives: a dance project in a children’s and youth hospice, and a regular dance class designed for people with multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s.

The supporting programme will continue to provide behind-the-scenes insights through premiere talks and open rehearsals. Opportunities for dialogue will include ballet talks, where ensemble members and artistic contributors engage in personal conversation, and the Forum, which will explore social themes in the context of stage dance.

Visually, the upcoming season is shaped by the photographic work of Evelyn Bencicova. The Slovak artist specialises in photography and new media, combining her interest in contemporary culture with academic research to create a space where conceptual ideas meet visual expression.

Artistic Director Christian Spuck emphasises the season's focus:
"We dedicate this season to what culture can be: a force that connects us, awakens us, and gives us hope. In Berlin, culture has always been more than a luxury. It is a reflection of history and a changing society, a place for encounter and debate, a creative resistance against indifference and stagnation."

General ticket sales begin on 20 May 2025. Members of the Friends' Circle and holders of a Dance Ticket can purchase tickets in advance starting on 13 May 2025.
