Ballet Gala

The highlight and grand finale of Ballet Week is the festive Ballet Gala at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. This year’s gala by Staatsballett Berlin offers a dazzling showcase of the company’s artistic breadth, with a few surprises in store. On two dates, the ensemble presents beloved excerpts from classical and contemporary ballets, virtuosic solos, and pas de deux by renowned choreographers.

Among the works featured are Sir Frederick Ashton’s Voices of Spring (set to music by Johann Strauss), José Carlos Martínez’s Delibes Suite, the balcony pas de deux from Christian Spuck’s Romeo and Juliet, and his witty gala piece Grand Pas de deux.

Audiences can also look forward to masterful performances from iconic works such as George Balanchine’s Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux and William Forsythe’s In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated—both of which offer the soloists a chance to showcase their technical brilliance and expressive range. Also on the program: Skew-Whiff by Sol León and Paul Lightfoot, a playfully inventive piece exploring different modes of movement, and Aria, a powerful, emotionally charged duet by British choreographer Douglas Lee.

In COME BACK, a witty and sharp-eyed work by emerging choreographer Samantha Lynch, five dancers explore human relationships and the absurdities of everyday life with a light touch.

From the current Staatsballett repertoire, soloists from the ensemble will also perform highlights from Swan Lake, Giselle, and William Forsythe’s Blake Works I.
